Summary

The Western Australian Department of Mines was established in 1894 and took over responsibility for mining and geology in Western Australia from the Department of Lands and Surveys (1890 - 1986). It oversaw the School of Mines at Kalgoorlie (1902 - 1969) and the Geological Survey Branch. Operating until 1992 when it was replaced by the Department of Minerals and Energy (1992 - 2001) by which time it was active in Western Australia's petroleum industry and ran the Western Australian Government Chemical Laboratories.
