Summary

The Queensland Lands and Works Department was established in 1862 to manage Crown Lands and public land that would be used for public infrastructure, utilities or defence. The Colonial Architect, Engineer of Roads, Director of Botanical Gardens and Surveyor General sat within the Lands and Works Department. In 1866 the Lands and Works Department was split into two the Lands Department (1866 - 1996) and Public Works Department (I) (1866 - 1887).
