Summary

The Department of Mines and Energy (I) carried out most of the same roles as its predecessor, the Department of Minerals and Energy (1992 - 1996). It was involved in the provision of electricity to the state of Queensland as well as many aspects of the mining and gas industry. This included responsibilities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters relating to mineral resources, royalties, titles, and environmental management. In 1999 the environmental responsibilities held by the Department of Mines and Energy were transferred to the Environmental Protection Agency (1998 - 2004). In 2001 the Department of Mines and Energy (I) merged with the Department of Natural Resources creating the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (2001 - 2004).
