Summary

Ferdinand von Mueller was the first Government Botanist of Victoria and held the post for 43 years from 1853 until his death. From 1857-1873 Mueller was Director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens and in 1855-1856 was botanist to the North Australian Exploring Expedition. He was the inaugural president, Royal Society of Victoria, 1860. During his career he wrote over 800 papers and articles on different aspects of botany. He was the author of many Eucalyptus species, several of which are now recognised as species of Corymbia. The plant genera Muelleranthus (Fabaceae) and Muellerina (Loranthaceae) were named in his honour. For more information see the Correspondence of Ferdinand von Mueller Project.

Details

In addition to his involvement with the Royal Society of Victoria Ferdinand von Mueller was a council member of the Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science (1854); council member of the Philosophical Society of Victoria (1854); first honorary member of the Philosophical Institute of Victoria, (1855) and its president in 1859; and president of the Victorian Branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia and vice-president of the Society as a whole, 1883-96.

Editor's note: In the list of publications below, there are many entries for resources about Mueller but only few select entries of the over 800 publications by Mueller himself. Those entries have been included as they are important evidence for other entries for people, organisations or other things in the Encyclopedia. It is not the policy of the Encyclopedia to publish comprehensive scientifc publication lists for people but to cite those lists where available or hold copies in our files. These can be supplied upon request. For a comprehensive list of Mueller's publications see Churchill, Muir and Sinkora (1978, supplement 1984). The Correspondence of Ferdinand von Mueller Project based at the National Herbarium of Victoria aims to find, edit and publish Mueller's prolific correspondence, with the cooperation of the repositories holding these letters, and ultimately produce a searchable database. Other outputs of the Project include biographical notes on Mueller's contacts, correspondents, and those after who he named plants; lists of his honours and awards; additions to the list of his publications; and a chronology of life events.
