Summary
Sally Smith was a world authority on the mycorrhizal symbiosis between plants and fungi. She made outstanding contributions to our understanding of the structure of the plant-fungal interface, of nutrient transfer across it and of the molecular processes involved in forming and controlling the interface. With David Read she co-authored the second and third editions of the definitive text Mycorrhizal symbiosis (1997, 2008). Sally Smith was Professor of Soil Science at the University of Adelaide from 1995 to 2006, and Director of the Centre for Plant Root Symbioses, a designated research centre at the University of Adelaide's Waite Institute of Agricultural Research.
