Summary
Birds Australia replaced the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union in 1997 and continued the purposes of the Union of studying, conserving and enjoying Australia's native birds. The structure of regional and special interest groups continued, as did the program of publishing books, the scientific journal The Emu and members' newsletter Wingspan. On 1 January 2012 Birds Australia merged with the Bird Observation and Conservation Australia to form Birdlife Australia, an acknowledgement by members of both organisations of the convergence of their interests.
