Description

The 1st Australian engineering heritage conference was held in Brisbane, Queensland, 9-12 May 1982.

Abstract

This Conference is of particular importance to Australia in that it is the first which directs attention specifically to its engineering heritage. The first settlement of Australia co-incided with the Industrial Revolution, and the subsequent development of the continent relied inevitably on a substantial contribution from the engineer, the technologist and the industrialist. It is therefore, remarkable that heritage work in the past has concentrated predominantly on aboriginal culture or social, economic and architectural aspects of the history of the community. The following papers may go some way towards redressing this imbalance.

In addition to a series of case studies, the papers present heritage programmes, recording procedures, conservation techniques and educational needs. The Conference workshops are designed to provide opportunities for the free exchange of ideas, and the establishment of principles on which engineering heritage work may proceed in Australia in the future.

Before the engineer can contribute to the conservation of his heritage he must learn new and strange skills; this volume should assist him in acquiring them. It may also open the eyes of non-engineers to the scope and breadth of the engineering heritage, and encourage some of them to venture into this untapped and absorbingly-interesting field. If this Conference leads to some progress in these directions it will have achieved the objectives of its organisers.
