- Abstract
In virtually all developed countries of the western world interest in the conservation and understanding of the physical objects associated with engineering and industry is at a very high level. In most countries governments have responded to this interest in a variety of ways involving research, grants, legislation, physical protection.
In Australia the Commonwealth Government and some State governments have responded to initiatives from private citizens and organisations, including engineers, to tackle a number of the questions involved in the protection of the engineering heritage. This paper will look at some of these responses in Australia, north America and Europe.
