- Abstract
Lawrence Hargrave was one of the first eminent Australians in science. His successful flying of the twin cell box kites had a direct and positive influence on the work of the European pioneers in aviation. A project to reconstruct Hargrave's box kite was initiated and the re-flying of the kites (four in series) was a success. In addition to reviewing Hargrave's work and detailing the reconstruction efforts, this paper confirms the status of Hargrave as a world pioneer in aviation.
