- Abstract
Town gas production in Christchurch is described from its inception in 1863 to the closure of the carbonisation plant in 1981, along with the development of various by-products over this period. The characteristic contributions of a succession of engineers are outlined. Factors leading to the decline of the operation are noted. Efforts to record the works in its final year of operation, and the difficulties encountered, are presented.
