Summary
The Sir Ian McLennan Impact from Science and Engineering Award has been awarded since 1985. It was inaugurated by leaders of Australian industry and technology to recognise outstanding contributions by CSIRO scientists and engineers to national development. Preference is given to commercial successes with strong economic returns and achievements resulting insignificant national and/or community benefits. Usually presented annually to individuals or teams, the Award was presented in alternate years between 2000 and 2018. Occasionally there is more than one recipient per year. The Award perpetuates the sort of achievements Ian McLennan promoted and encouraged from scientific research. McLennan was an engineer and business executive who was responsible for major developments in Australia's iron and steel industry.
