Summary
This first recorded European government official responsible for shipping and nautical science was Captain Thomas Lipson R.N. appointed in 1836. In 1838 when South Australia received self-governance legislation was passed supporting Captain Thomas Lipson R.N.s role, creating the Department of the Harbour Master. In 1843 the Department of the Harbour Master was abolished and replaced by the Harbor Department (1843 - 1860).
