Summary
Stanley Blake worked for the Queensland Herbarium from 1945 until his death. Before joining the Herbarium he received Walter and Eliza Hall fellowship which allowed him to undertake botanical collecting expeditions to Western Queensland (1935 - 1937). He also carried out a special survey of potential rubber-producing plants in Queensland in 1939. Blake specialised in the taxonomy of tropical and subtropical grasses and Cyperaceae, Eucalyptus Idiospermaceae, Plectranthus and Melaleuca. He named one of the non-Australian eucalypts, Eucalyptus urophylla, which grows in Indonesia. Blake published extensively in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland and was a major contributor to the Contributions from the Queensland Herbarium. He was President of both the Royal Society of Queensland and the Queensland Naturalists' Club, and a life member of the National Parks Association. The Queensland Herbarium holds over 17,000 of his specimens.
