Medical Research Council Postdoctorate Fellow, National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London 1956-57 and Department of Pharmacology , Oxford University 1957-59; Rockefeller Travelling Fellow, Department of Physiology & Biophysics, University of Illinois 1959; senior lecturer, Department of Zoology, University of Melbourne 1959-62, reader in physiological zoology 1962-64, professor of zoology and chairman of department 1964-75; head, Department of Anatomy and Embryology, University College, London 1975- ; convener, Centre for Neuroscience, University College London 1975- . Silver medal, Royal Society of Victoria 1970; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1971; Fellow, Royal Society 1986.
