Summary
Harald Breidahl was one of Australia's earliest endocrinologists. Having completed his medical studies, he spent several years overseas, at the Mayo Clinic and in London where he became interested in diabetes during pregnancy. On returning to Australia, he spent the rest of his career in some of Melbourne's major hospitals, including the Royal Melbourne and the Queen Victoria Hospitals. Between 1963 and 1984 he was physician in the Endocrine Unit of the Alfred Hospital. In addition he had a busy private practice. Breidahl was a leading figure in professional organisations. He was a founding and Life Member of the Endocrine Society of Australia and the inaugural President of the Australian Diabetes Society. For seven years he was Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation.
