Summary

The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) is the peak national medical and scientific body in Australia for diabetes. A member-based organisation, the Society consists of endocrinologists, scientists, researchers, diabetes educators, allied health professionals, health administrators and primary care practitioners. The aims of the Society are to prevent diabetes and its complications; provide excellence in education for health professionals; work with other organisations committed to improved diabetes treatment and care; advocate for health policies around diabetes and its prevention; and support those with diabetes to live well. Partners in these aims are Diabetes Australia and the Australian Diabetes Educators Association. In conjunction with the Association, the Society hosts the annual Australasian Diabetes Congress. As a speciality society of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Society is responsible for the training of diabetes specialists, and ensuring that specialists maintain and improve their skills and knowledge.

Details

The National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC) was established in 1994 by the Society and the Australian Diabetes Educators Association. It is a national collective of diabetes centres that seek to improve the standard of care available to people with diabetes. Since March 2015, NADC is a division of the Society. Other divisions of the Society include Diabetes Feet Australia (established 2015).

Awarded presented by the Society include:
Kellion Award - for outstanding contribution in diabetes research, clinical or service areas in Australia (from 2000);
Lifetime Achievement Award - recognises an individual who has made significant, fundamental contributions to diabetes (whether in research, clinical practice, leadership, mentorship or other) (from 2017);
Honorary Life Membership - recognises long-standing members of the Society for outstanding contribution to the Society, and distinguished service to diabetes in Australia and overseas.
