Summary
James Hamilton was a physician who, after arriving in South Australia in 1876, was a general practitioner in rural areas until 1891. In that year he moved to Adelaide and joined the practice of Edward Way. He was also appointed Honorary Assistant Surgeon in obstetrics at the Adelaide Hospital, later becoming Honorary Gynaecologist. Other hospitals with which Hamilton was associated were the North Adelaide Hospital (where he was a colleague of Edward Way) and the Queen's Home (later the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital). For 15 years, Hamilton was a member of the Council of the University of Adelaide where he also lectured in gynaecology between 1902 and 1920. He was President of the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association in from 1890 to 1891.
