Having qualified in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, he returned to Adelaide in 1873. In addition to being appointed Health Officer for the City of Adelaide, Way was on the staff of several local medical facilities, including the North Adelaide Hospital (with James Hamilton) and the Adelaide Homeopathic Dispensary (with Allan Campbell and Sylvanus Magarey). He was supporter and early staff member of the Adelaide Children's Hospital, established 1878. For 20 years Way was Honorary Physician and head of the gynaecology department at the Adelaide Hospital, and a member of its Board of Management. Between 1886 and 1901 he lectured in clinical medicine and obstetrics at the University of Adelaide.
