Having qualified in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, he returned to Adelaide in 1873. In addition to being appointed Health Officer for the City of Adelaide, Way was on the staff of several local medical facilities, including the North Adelaide Hospital (with James Hamilton) and the Adelaide Homeopathic Dispensary (with Allan Campbell and Sylvanus Magarey). He was supporter and early staff member of the Adelaide Children's Hospital, established 1878.
