Summary
The Australian Optical Society is open to anyone who is interested in, or contributed to, optics in the widest sense. Life Membership is awarded to those members who have made sustained contributions to optics throughout their career. William (Beattie) Steele, the first Chairman of the Society, is commemorated in the W. H. (Beattie) Steel Medal, awarded occasionally to recognise outstanding contributions to the field of optics in Australia and New Zealand. The Society also awards the John Love Award (until 2017 known as the Technical Optics Award) recognising innovations and technical advances in the field of optics. In 2020 the Society changed its name to the Australian and New Zealand Optical Society.
