Summary
In 1879 responsibility for public works, including railways was transferred from the Colonial Secretary's Office forming the Department of Works and Railways. In 1890 the Department was split into two, the Western Australian Government Railways [1] (1890 - 1914) and the Department of Works and Buildings (1890 - 1900).
