Summary

Alan Brown was an accomplished forester and research scientist with a national and an international reputation. Much of his research focused on breeding of Pinus radiata in which he was a world leader. After the Forest Research Institue in Canberra (where Brown had been Research Scientist for some years) amalgamated with the CSIRO Division of Forest Research, he ultimately became Chief of the Division's successor, the Division of Forestry. He stepped down as Chief in 1992 to return to a research role. Brown's contribution to international forestry included membership of the Boards of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) (from which he received the Distinguished Service Award) and the Center for International Forestry Research.
