Summary
John Turnbull graduated as a forester from the University of Wales in 1962. He was a forester with the Woods and Forest Department of South Australia before he joined the Forestry and Timber Bureau in 1965. In 1974 he was placed in charge of the Seeds Section of what was later known as the Division of Forest Research, CSIRO. For his doctorate at the Australian National University he studied the genealogy of Eucalyptus cloeziana.
Details
John Turnbull has made extensive seed and botanical collections of tree species, particularly eucalypts. He visited many parts of the world, including Mexico, the Philippines, Timor, Italy, Israel, Tunisia, Malta and Thailand.
Until 1976 he was the Australian representative on the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) Forest Tree Seed Committee, and leader of the ISTA Working Group on Tropical Tree Seeds. He is a panel member on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources.
