Summary

Ian Ross was a chemist whose most important research was on quantum chemistry and theoretical interpretation of the electronic spectra of aromatic molecules. He was Professor of Chemistry at the Australian National University from 1968 to 1977, then becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Ross was a driving force behind establishment of engineering and information technology studies at the University. He was also involved in the establishment of Anutech, the commercial arm of the University. His wider involvement in the scientific community included serving as Chairman of Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, the Australian Research Grants Committee, and of the Physical Sciences Panel of the Co-operative Research Centres Committee.
