Summary
Jospeh Milligan was surgeon to the Van Diemen's Land Company 1829-1842 and then held various government positions including that of medical officer and superintendent of aborigines. He was a founder of the Royal Society of Van Diemen's Land.
Details
"Milligan, Dr Joseph was appointed as surgeon to the Van Diemen's Land Company in 1830 and became interested in the natural history of the island. He formed a close acquaintance with Ronald Gunn and together they collected specimens for William Hooker at Kew Gardens." (Pybus 2024 page 286)
He and his assoiates were know to collect and trade in Tasmanian First People's remains. " He donated a skull to the Royal Society of Tasmania and subsequently sold skulls to various collectors in England, two purchased by George Busk and four by Joseph Barnard Davis, all six later donated to the Royal College of Surgeons." (Pybus 2024 pages 286-287)
