Summary

Joseph-Antoine Bruny d'Entrecasteaux commanded a French expedition consisting of the vessels "Recherche" and "Esperance" which visited Australia and the Pacific in search of La Perouse (1791-1793). Naturalists on the voyage included J.J.H. Labillardiere and C.A.G. Riche. He joined the navy at 15, served in seven years war, in peace served in Mediterranean and Indian Oceans. Appointed commander of the Indian Station of the French navy in 1786, later appointed governor of Ile de France and Ile Bourbon, Indian Ocean.
