Summary
Herbert Hewlett joined the Children's Hospital, Melbourne, in 1896 in an honorary capacity as physician and surgeon. The following year he established the Hospital's X-ray department, the first such department any Melbourne public hospital. Hewlett was appointed Honorary Skiagraphist in 1912, and continued in this capacity until 1936. He concurrently held the same position at St Vincent's Hospital. Hewlett was highly-regarded as a radiologist and always ready to adopt technological advances, particularly with regard to improving safety in using radiological equipment. His interests included investigation of the intestinal tract, in which he collaborated with J. F. Wilkinson. On the foundation of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Radiology (later Radiologists) in 1935 Hewlett became a Member, and was Vice-President in 1939.
