Summary
Sandy Mathieson was widely considered to be the father of Australian X-ray crystallography. He earned considerable recognition for his pioneering research on crystallographic methods, molecular structure determination and related instrument development. In 1947 he joined the CSIR Chemical Physics Section, and was Chief Research Scientist in the CSIRO Division of Chemical Physics from 1965 to 1985. On retirement he was Honorary Professor of Chemistry at La Trobe University where he remained for nearly 20 years. In 1967 he was appointed a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA). The Society of Crystallographers of Australian and New Zealand inaugurated the Sandy Mathieson Award for young researchers in 2012.
