Summary

John Singleton was a medical practitioner noted for his philanthropic activities, particularly among the poor of Melbourne and in prison visiting. After arriving in Victoria in 1851, he established a practice in Melbourne and with the assistance of his wife, Isabella, founded the Melbourne City Mission. During the 1860s he was in Warrnambool and involved in the Framlingham Aboriginal Mission. Returning to Melbourne Singleton started the Collingwood Free Medical Centre in 1869 (now the Singleton Medical Welfare Centre), and two years later was co-founder of the Children's Hospital.
