Summary
James Newbery was appointed as analyst to the Geological Survey of Victoria in 1865 and then scientific superintendent of the Cosmo Newbery was an industrial chemist and metallurgist who was appointed Analyst to the Geological Survey of Victorian in 1865. Before coming to Victoria he was educated at the Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard, U.S.A., and qualified in metallurgy and assaying at Royal school of Mines, London. When his position with the Survey was abolished, he became Scientific Superintendent of the Industrial and Technological Museum in Melbourne, which position he held intil 1895. While in this role he continued to act as analyst for the Survey. Newbery was an expert withess to the Royal Commission on Coal in 1890. With Claude Vautin he developed and patented a method of chlorination of gold extraction widely adopted in many countries. For the 1880 International Exhibition he was Superintendent of Juries and Awards. In 1887 Newbery was badly injured in a train accident and never recovered.
