Summary
The University of New England was established in 1954 after the New England University College gained autonomy from the University of Sydney. In 1989 the Armidale College of Advanced Education amalgamated with the University. Other colleges joined the University in 1989 resulting in campuses in Armidale, Lismore and Orange. In 1993 the Lismore campus became Southern Cross University and the Orange campus became part of the University of Sydney. In 2003 the University of New England has four faculties and eighteen teaching schools.
