Summary
The Philosophical Society of New South Wales (PSNSW) was established in 1856. It was at the instigation of the incoming Governor of New South Wales, William Denison, that members of the Australian Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Science, Commerce and Agriculture gathered with a view to reviving their near-moribund Society. The first meeting of the PSNSW was held in May 1856. Its purposes were a continuation of those of its predecessor. On receiving a Royal warrant in 1866 the Society became the Royal Society of New South Wales, its last meeting being held in December 1866.
