Summary
Australian Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Science, Commerce and Agriculture (more usually known as the Australian Philosophical Society) was established in 1850. Its focus was reflected in its title, with emphasis on economic advantage for the colony. Cataloging the colony's natural resources was a priority. (This was the second attempt to establish a such a society in New South Wales, the first being the Philosophical Society of Australasia 1821 - 1822). No meetings seem to have been held after May 1851. William Denison, newly arrived in 1855 as Governor of New South Wales and noted for his scientific interests, urged the reconstitution of the Society on the remaining members. The Philosophical Society of New South Wales began in May 1856 with Denison as President.
