Summary

The Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) was established by the Australian Government in 1970 to preserve and apply in Australia and overseas the technical and management skills that had been assembled for the massive Snowy Mountains Scheme involving hydropower, roads, bridges and infrastructure in southeastern Australia between 1949 and 1974.

The company was corporatised in 1989 and privatised by sale to the staff in 1993.
