Summary

The CSIRO Meat Research Laboratory was established in 1969. In the early 1990s CSIRO co-operated with the Australian Meat and Livestock Research and Development Corporation, to make the Laboratory a separate commercial entity, known as Australian Meat Technology Pty. Ltd.

"The Meat Research Laboratory which is part of the CSIRO Division of Food Research is situated on a 15 acre site at Cannon Hill and was established in 1969. On the site there are two research wings which contain twenty five individual laboratory units, an administrative wing, a series of cattle and sheep pens and slaughter and processing facilities."

"The main objectives of the laboratory are: to solve present problems in the meat industry; to expand the basic knowledge of meat and muscle; to develop improved methods for the preservation and utilisation of beef, lamb and mutton and to develop new products and processes for the benefit of the industry. The laboratory has a total staff of ninety which includes thirty scientists."
