Abstract

This paper describes the field and office methods adopted in preparation of designs for enlargement of the Eildon Dam,
and discusses the adopted design. On account of a subsidence which occurred in the existing dam at a late stage in its construction, it was necessary to carry out extensive investigations to determine the nature and state of the materials in both the existing rock-fill embankment and its foundation and to analyse the possible causes for the failure. The results and conclusions drawn from these studies are also given.
