Summary
The Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme manages banding and the recording of data from across Australia, and authorises individuals to undertake banding. Data collected and managed by the Scheme relates to species, sex, age, date and location, body mass, morphometric measurements and breeding condition. It also maintains information on threatened fauna and migratory species. Research supported included projects in movements and migration, physiology, longevity, population demography, and individual behaviour. The Australian Bird Banding Scheme was started in 1953 by the CSIRO Wildlife Survey Section to coordinate banding schemes across Australia. The Bat Banding Scheme began in 1960, also in the Section. These Schemes combined in July 1984 when they were transferred to the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service.
