Carlson, Laurance (Laurie) (1936 - 2022)

Summary

Laurie Carlson was a librarian whose career started at the Commonwealth Aircraft Factory after he left school. He became Librarian at the Port Melbourne Public Library and in 1972 Readers' Services Librarian at Deaking University. Carlson suffered for most of his life from MS, overcoming the odds and learning to walk again. His worsening condition resulted in him taking early retirement in 1991. Appreciating that MS sufferers were in need need of support, Carlson was encouraged to initiate the MS Society. Having completed a BA at the University of Melbourne he later began a masters degree in History and Philosophy of Science at the University, his subject being the history of water supply in the Geelong region. Carlson made a major contribution to the history of Australian science and technology as the compiler of the first 22 editions of the Bibliography of the history of Australian science published between 1981 and 2001.
