Summary
The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (commonly known as VicHealth) is an independent statutory authority of the Victorian Government, established under the Tobacco Act of 1987. Objectives stated in the Act related to the promotion of good health, and the prevention and early detection of disease. The Act set the standard for best practice in efforts to reduce tobacco use by banning outdoor tobacco advertising and buying out tobacco sponsorship of sport and the arts. Current programs of the Foundation include promoting the benefits of healthy eating and regular physical activity, increasing awareness of harm from alcohol, improving mental well-being, and funding activities and research in support of these aims. Initially funded by dedicated taxes, the Council is now funded by the Victorian Department of Health.
