Summary
Viv Ebsary was a pioneering biomedical engineer, recognised for his expertise in designing, developing and manufacturing innovative medical equipment. Ebsary, with paediatric surgeon Douglas Cohen and anaesthetist Dr Victor Hercus, successfully designed and built the first heart-lung machine in Sydney, that radically changed paediatric cardiac surgery. He also made portable anaesthetic machines, hypothermia machines, respiratory intensive care units, and other medical equipment including implants, devices for correcting spinal deformities, and chair-lift appliances.
The registered company he established as V R Ebsary & Co in 1932, was changed to Ebsray Pumps Pty Limited in 1947, and the ongoing development and success of Ebsray Pumps has further enabled other technological developments in both industrial and medical fields.
His distinguished contributions to biomedical engineering were recognised when in 1984 the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children named its cardiac ward in his honour, and in 1989 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
