Summary

Frank Broeze was a highly respected maritime and economic historian who for over 40 years taught at the University of Western Australia. He published on a wide range of subjects besides Australian maritime history, including global shipping, the Indian Ocean, and ports. Among the many organisations in which he was involved were the Maritime Archaeology Advisory Committee on shipwreck legislation and the Research Council of the Australian Institute of Maritime Archaeology. He was a founding Member of the Australian Association for Maritime History, being President 1983 - 1985), and President of the International Commission of Maritime History 1990 - 1995. For some years he was Deputy Chairman of the Western Australian Maritime Museum. The Frank Broeze Memorial Maritime History Book Prize, usually presented in alternate years and co-sponsored by the Australian Association for Maritime History with the Australian Maritime Museum, is awarded to books which address any aspect of maritime history relating to or impacting on Australia and the Australian Community.
