Summary
The Mawson Medal and Lecture has been awarded by the Australian Academy of Science since 1981 (in alternate years since 1994). It recognises outstanding contributions to earth science in Australia, being awarded to a scientist who is usually resident in Australia and whose work is relevant to Australia. The recipient presents a lecture at both an Academy function in their home State and a meeting of the Geological Society of Australia. Douglas Mawson, a foundation Fellow of the Academy, was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Adelaide and a renowned Antarctic explorer.
