Summary
Charlie Veron is a marine zoologist with an international reputation for his research on the taxonomy of corals. He is thought to have discovered approximately 20% of the world's coral species. His discoveries include the Coral Triangle, an area of vast biodiversity encompassing many of the islands and seas of Southeast Asia. Veron is renowned for devising a taxonomic framework for corals now used throughout the world, and for applying the concept of reticulate evolution to marine biology. For many years he worked for the Australian Institute of Marine Science, including a term as Chief Scientist. Among his many publications is the book Corals in space and time: biogeography and evolution of the Scleractinia (1995) which challenged conventional concepts of evolution in corals and other marine invertebrates. Veron is a key contributor to the open-access website on coral taxonomy, biogeography and identification (www.coralsoftheworld.org). He is an outspoken campaigner on environmental issues and the threats to coral reefs and climate change.
