Summary
Lou Vance was a physicist internationally recognised as an authority on the development of wasteforms for nuclear waste. In particular he led research into synroc technology, an artificial mineral for the safe storage of radioactive elements invented by Ted Ringwood, and into its commercialisation potential. After holding several research positions over nearly 20 years in the United Kingdom, the U.S.A. and Canada investigating waste-form technology, Vance became Senior Research Scientist at Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation in 1987. He played a key role in advocating the use of synroc. Vance published over 400 papers and held three patents related to synroc.
