Summary

Ian Ferguson was an internationally respected expert on forestry economics, policy and management. In 1981 he was appointed foundation Professor of Forest Science at the University of Melbourne, later also holding senior offices in the administration of the University. Ferguson took a leading role in professional organisations; as President of the Institute of Foresters of Australia he initiated the Registered Professional Foresters scheme. He chaired the Victorian Timber Industry Inquiry that resulted in a strategy for modernising industry practice over the following 15 years. Ferguson also contributed to the forestry industry as a member of organisations such as the Forest and Wood Products Research Development Corporation
