Summary
Michael Cowley is a physiologist widely recognised for his research into the causes of obesity and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes. His research focuses on how the body tells the brain about how much body fat we have and levels of blood sugar. He discovered why obesity causes high blood pressure and leads efforts to develop drugs for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. In 2017 Cowley was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Monash University in 2017. He was awarded the Science Minister's (later the Frank Fenner) Prize for Life Scientist of the Year in 2009 for his contribution to our understanding of metabolism and obesity.
