Summary

In 1978 the Hospitals Department (1940 - 1978) and Department of Public Health (1951 - 1978) merged to form the South Australian Health Commission (1978 - 2004). The formation of the South Australian Health Commission was a recommendation of a 1970 enquiry in South Australian health services. Up until 2004 some public health responsibilities were still held by the Department of Human Services (1997 - 2004). In 2004 a new Department called the Department of Health was created to manage these responsibilities, and in 2008 the South Australian Health Commission was replaced by the Health Performance Council which sat within the Department of Health (2004 - 2012).
