Summary
St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research (SVI) was officially opened in 1958 under the name of St Vincent's School of Medical Research. SVI is member of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries and closely affiliated with St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and The University of Melbourne. In the early years it had a focus on protein sequencing and developing an automated proces that became know as 'Matilda' The Sequenator. The research focus subsequently expanded to include diseases such as cancer, Type 1 and 2 diabetes, heart disease, bone disease and Alzheimer's disease. SVI has made breakthroughs in relation to hormones such as PTHrP, angiotensin, and chorionic gonadotropin, enzymes like AMPK, the GMCSF receptor, and have played a central role in the Australian Islet Transplantation Program.
Details
By 2024 their research areas were grouped as: Bioinformatics; Cancer; Healthy Ageing; Immunology; Infectious Disease; and Regenerative Medicine. In each group there was one or more laboratories or labs. Annual Reports are available from their website dating from 1999 and Newsletters from March 2022.
