Summary
Geoffrey Mercer was one of Australia's leading applied mathematicians who had the rare ability to combine high-end theory with practical attention to data. His research covered a wide range of areas including bushfire modelling, mathematical combustion modelling and heat transfer, flow through porous media, dispersion and hydrodynamics, and movement in a threat environment. The subjects of his considerable published output varied from agricultural spraying to optimal routes through minefields. Most recently he was leader of the multidisciplinary Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Modelling Group at the National Centre of Epidemiology and Population Health. Mercer played a significant role in the Mathematics in Industry Study Group, the annual workshops of which join researchers, academics and industry and business representatives in seeking solutions to complex real-life problems. He was also active in the Australian and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics Division of the Australian Mathematical Society, holding several executive positions including that of founding Chair of the special interest group in Mathematical Biology.
