Summary
Don Foreman was a taxonomic botanist whose research centred on the families Monimiaceae, Atherospermataceae, Proteaceae and Winteraceae. After seven years working at the Lae Herbarium on Papua New Guinea and at the Botany Department at the University of New England, he joined the staff of the National Herbarium of Victoria. Alongside his taxonomic research Foreman undertook several major projects for the Herbarium. He was a driving force and the initial Editor of the Flora of Victoria project, the first comprehensive publication on the plants of Victoria for over 60 years. As Collections Manager he was responsible for introducing a program for the electronic recording of specimen data before the notion of an Australia-wide database was mooted. Many of Foreman's publications were on genera of Proteaceae for the Flora of Australia and the Handbooks of the Flora of Papua New Guinea. Foreman moved to Canberra to become an editor of the Flora of Australia, after which he established a landscaping business with his wife and became involved in the scientific work of the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
