Summary
William Holman was the first radiological specialist in Tasmania and was instrumental in promoting and improving radiotherapy practice in that state. He played a key role in the foundation and administration of the Tasmanian Cancer Institute. In 1952 he moved to Melbourne and for 12 years was Medical Director of the Cancer Institute Board of Victoria. From the 1930s Holman was in the forefront of using new techniques to treat breast cancer and continued to search for alternatives to surgical mastectomy. His work in this area attracted international attention. At the urging of Holman and several colleagues, the Australian and New Zealand Association of Radiology (later Radiologists) was founded in 1935.
